Job Description and Duties

Under the supervision of the Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, lead direction of Caltrans Highway Maintenance Lead Worker or other qualified crew member, the Caltrans Equipment Operator I operates, maintains and repairs various Maintenance and Landscape equipment, performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with maintenance and repair of State highways, and works with the rest of a crew in the performance of these activities. A valid, unrestricted Class B driver’s license with Tank endorsement (N) is required while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system. When not operating the specified equipment, may perform any of the duties outlined under Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker or Caltrans Landscape Maintenance Worker. The incumbent works individually or with a crew and may occasionally oversee a less experienced coworker. Incumbent may be required to work overtime including weekends/holidays if needed, may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts, and is expected to respond to emergency calls. The position may require out-of-town travel, usually in week-long increments. This position is represented under collective bargaining.

Working Conditions

Position located at  District 11/Maintenance Division/East and West Region San Diego County .

Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.

Most work is done outdoors, where incumbent shall be exposed to dust, wind, exhaust fumes, noise, uneven surfaces, extreme  of heat and cold, inclement weather and moving traffic. Incumbent may also be exposed to loud noises, irritating plants, insects  and animals.

Personal safety requirements include but are not limited to:

• Appropriate footwear such as serviceable leather shoes or boots, specifically fabricated for use in highway maintenance and/or  construction environments, in good and sturdy condition must be worn.
• Either long or short-sleeved shirts provided by Caltrans, or a safety vest is to be worn over non-safety shirts or coats.
• Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
• Provided safety gear such as hard hat, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirator, chaps, or  other safety gear must be worn when required by the department.

New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

Special Requirements

• The position(s) require(s) a Drug Screening be passed prior to being hired.

• The position(s) require(s) a valid unrestricted Class B commercial driver’s license, with Tank Vehicle (N) endorsement.
• Possession of a valid driver’s license is required when operating a State owned or leased vehicle.
